Tips for the festive season with your dog or cat

You celebrate the festive season with your family. And that includes your pet! These tips help you celebrate in a pet-proof way with the whole family.

Pet proof decorations

The preparations
Decorating your house with a cat or dog can be quite a challenge. Your pet is extremely inquisitive about anything new in the home and will be keen to sniff, play and knock them over. The following tips will ensure a safe Christmas tree.

Choose an artificial tree

A real tree loses its needles, which can be dangerous if swallowed.

Leave the tree for a while before you decorate it

Pets are sometimes like children: after a while, the novelty wears off and they find something else to play with.

Prevent your pet from getting close to the tree

Cats and dogs don't like aluminium foil. This glittery material doesn't feel nice on paws and makes a strange noise. Wrap aluminium foil around the base of the tree and part of the trunk too. Or you can surround the tree with a small barrier.

Decorate above pet level

When decorating, hang any dangerous and breakable ornaments high up, so that your pet can't reach them. Anything that fits into their mouth can be dangerous for your pet. And watch out for strings and hooks.

Be careful with lights and Christmas garlands

Those pretty strings of lights and sparkly garlands look very festive, but your pet will also find them extremely interesting and is likely to chew them or play with them.

Fun Christmas gifts for your pet
Your furry friend also deserves a gift at Christmas. A new bed perhaps? And new toys are always welcome, of course. By regularly swapping around their toys, they stay 'new' for your pet. There are fun puzzles for hiding treats or biscuits.

A delicious Christmas meal for your pet
Christmas dinner is obviously a special time when we all enjoy gorgeous food. It's tempting to give your pet something nice from your own dinner, but it's better to choose a nice treat that is really intended for your pet.
