Can my dog suffer from allergies?

What is an allergy?

Simply put, an allergy is a reaction of the immune system to a harmless substance. Normally, the immune system helps protect the dog's body from viruses and bacteria. With an allergy, the immune system makes a mistake and thinks that pollen, the saliva of a flea or a certain animal protein are also harmful invaders. The system then goes to work to attack these intruders. Your dog may suddenly get very itchy or his hair may fall out. Always contact your vet if you notice this!

Flea Allergy: Itching Above the Butt

A flea allergy is the most common allergy in dogs. In particular, the underside of the back, just above the tail, is a real hot spot for itching. Fortunately, a flea allergy is fairly easy to treat. Treat your dog with a good flea remedy all year round. Has your dog already had fleas? Then treat not only your dog, but also all cushions and furniture he has been lying on. Environmental allergy: hay fever in dogs

An environmental allergy is an allergy to certain substances in the environment, similar to hay fever in humans. Dogs can also be allergic to pollen, mold and dust mites. This will make him itchy, which will cause him to scratch and lick a lot. The dog often has itching at the mouth, ears, paws, armpits and groin.

Once you know from the vet what your dog is allergic to, you can try to avoid serious reactions. For example, make sure that there are as few things in the house as possible that can trap allergens, such as a carpet. There are also anti-allergy dog beds for sale that can be washed at a high temperature. You can reduce or calm the skin reactions by washing your dog regularly with water or mild shampoo. Food or supplements with omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids (from fish oil) also contribute to a healthy coat and skin and can reduce itching.

Food allergy: rather not that protein

Dogs can be allergic to a certain protein that is used in dog food and dog snacks. This type of allergy manifests itself in itching all over the body and in rare cases also in vomiting and diarrhoea. To prevent this allergy, you will have to work with the vet to find the culprit through an elimination diet. You can also choose to give hypoallergenic dog food. The number of ingredients is kept as limited as possible, so that there is as little chance of an allergic reaction as possible.
